In this installment of "Ardent Shoeshine Dojo", Yuya Hasegawa talks about the fifth step in the shoe shine process, "applying rubbing ink", out of the 16 steps. I'm sure everyone is itching to read this article, which is a monthly tradition, because it's been eight months and I still haven't finished the process of applying the cobblestone ink. In the last article, I prepared the surface of the cobweb with sandpaper to remove roughness. In this state, the color has been removed, so the finish is not beautiful. So this time, we will use "Kova ink". It is a product manufactured by Columbus and has very strong coloring power, and since it also contains resin, it gives a glossy and beautiful finish.

However, do not apply too much. Apply thinly, as it will make the paint too shiny. Also, a trick unique to this tool is necessary. The brush is attached to the lid, so a lot of ink is soaked into the brush. If you leave it as it is, there will be too much ink, so first squeeze the ink well with the mouth part.

If you press the brush with a click, the ink will be squeezed out.

If you don't do this, the ink will soak into the brush too juicy and cause dripping or overcoating. Please make sure to do this first!

If the brush gets on the upper part of the brush, it will cause a stain, so be careful when applying the ink.

Apply the ink slowly so that the corners of the brush do not stick out from the edge.

If you can apply it in a single stroke, it is professional, but you can divide it into several strokes for the inside, outside, and heel.

The heel part is the part that is hard to soak in, so apply mainly to the lower part of the heel.

The heel is not usually rubbed that much, so it is difficult for the rubbing ink to penetrate into the heel.

After applying the entire coating, turn the shoes over and check that the edges have been neatly trimmed from the sole side. If you can apply the cobber ink in a way that the sole is slightly edged, the finish will be very beautiful.

You may hear some say, "No one is looking at the sole," but this kind of attention to detail will lead to a high level of polished shoe finish.
